The Government of Alberta has just announced an exciting proposal to create 8 new parks and recreation areas in the beautiful Bighorn area west of Nordegg and adjacent to Banff and Jasper National Parks. The proposal includes plans to reopen the Nordegg Ranger station, improve enforcement through hiring park rangers and conservation officers and proposes much needed investments in outhouses, bridges, trailhead parking and campsites in this much-loved but under-resourced area. The park proposal supports all the existing user trails and will protect the environment, enhance recreation opportunities for all Albertans and support local economic development. This is the biggest news for hikers since the establishment of Kananaskis Country 40 years ago!
But we need your help. The Government of Alberta is currently consulting on the plan, and it will only move forward if people like you show your love for the Bighorn and show your support. Will you let your voice be heard?
You can view the proposal here.
